Excellent site. We visited NZ in 2000 and as a naturalist I made notes on 6 species we saw in NZ. Your site enabled me to id the 2 species not found in Aus. - Red (NZ) Admiral and Rauparaha's Copper.

This is a good site the Maps you have give people a good idea of where to go to see different species and the info pages what times of year! I know you from the Monarch Trust Forum and think maybe you could help to get people to take a wider interest in the rarer species as this site has more information overall. I like both sites because they offer a slightly different approach.

Fantastic website. Thanks heaps! Will now be off butterfly spotting with the kids (and hope to see more than a common copper next time!)

Joanne,

This species is also found in Northern & Eastern Africa, so chances are it came to the UK from N. Africa as they have being known to migrate to the UK in past years. They are a rare migrant to the UK. A good page for UK Butterfly ID is http://ukbutterflies.co.uk/species_family.php?name=all&stage=imago

I'm trying to source Urtica ferox in the Waikato for raising Red Admirals. I have two growing plants covered with caterpillars, and have bought all the plants the Oratia Native Plant Nursery had left. Anyone who can help please email kate (@) trident.net.nz

Thanks Clinton,

They are an increasingly rare butterfly I agree. Originally I never did include the Coromandle, but got told, there is certainly some there & in Great Barrier Is still. I have heard of reports from near Waihi last year.

However I'm hoping sightings (or lack of) will confirm whether this distribution is correct or not.

Yours,
Robert.

There are NO forest ringlet butterflies in Coromandel Peninsula.
I lives in Thames for 7 past years and I have not seen forest ringlet butterflies.

Forest ringlet butterfly is extinct now as I been in bush, in Waitakere (north of Auckland) in late 1990s, looking for pupaes of forest ringlet butterfly, but I did not find any pupaes. I have seen lot of german wasps in Waitakere bush & I had not seen butterflies.

Your Sincerely

Clinton Care.
