It was London, 1966. I'd just bought Fairport Convention's first album, really excited about a rock take on folk music. Then I heard John Peel play tracks from Surrealistic Pillow, couldn't believe the uniqueness and the creativity of the music. I couldn't wait and went and bought the album as an (expensive) import, didn't take it off my record player for months. At age 67 today, still can't keep from playing the Airplane, music and memories all just too good...

I bought this book a couple of years ago, I'm surprised to find a site dedicated to it. This is a great book, very insightful, about a great band and a great group of musicians. It's a sad state of affairs that people are no longer interested in music that is politically or socially relevant. We've returned to "It's got a good beat and I can dance to it."

Buy this book. Buy several. Give them as gifts. Spread the love.

Jeff is a friend and my former editor at GOLDMINE magazine, so I am a wee bit prejudiced. Nonetheless, I am working on a new book and found myself relying heavily on GOT A REVOLUTION for some pertinent info regarding JA and the '60s. I use the term "relying" because I know that if Jeff wrote it, I can trust it to be so. . .

PS: Excepting SURREALSITIC PILLOW, JA remain under-appreciated as album-makers: from TAKES OFF through VOLUNTEERS, they rank with the most daring-and the best-groups of the era.
