Message The "Norkies" were a large part of the brewing industry in Burton on Trent. After the harvest in Norfolk the workers would move to Burton on Trent in special trains that were provided for them and for the next six months would do the work that the local labour force was unwilling to do in the maltings. |

Message I want to contact Mick O'Shea about the Rangitoto. I sailed on her in July 1963 from Auckland to Fort Lauderdale - then in 1968 (I think it was) when she did a farewell cruise to "nowhere" out from Auckland NZ. The 1963 trip was wonderful, I used to pay Paddy the Cook 2/6d to cook up a meal in the Galley. I was in D104 - and would go through the bulkhead, sneak across the engineroom with tjhose wonderful open crankshafts and the 10ft stroke x 3ft bore horizontally opposed engines. We came through tghe Galley into the Saloon at 3 am. Paddy had all his washing drying under the covers on the hot plates. We had to be careful sun bathing on the sun deck, as there was fuel oil in between the planks. Some fool engineer had flooded the header tank in the funnel and oil had pourede out over the sun deck. The engines broke down twice crossing the Pacific. It was the grewat badventure of a life time. Contact me at bmarx@otenz.co.nz |
